Most camp kitchen checklists online are written for a week-long 4WD trip and end up 40 items long. For a standard weekend away — Friday night to Sunday — most of that never leaves the boot. Here's a shorter list built around what actually gets used on a two-night trip.
Cooking
- A stove (single or twin burner, depending on how many people)
- One pot, one pan — you rarely need more for a weekend
- A lighter and matches, kept dry in a separate pouch
Eating and drinking
- Plates, cups, cutlery for the number of people, plus one spare set
- A sharp knife and a small chopping board
- An insulated mug or tumbler each — mornings are cold more often than people expect, even in the warmer months
Storage and surfaces
- A folding table — even a small one turns the boot lid or car floor into a proper prep space
- A wash basin for dishes, so you're not using drinking water for cleanup
- A cooler bag or hard esky, packed so the food you need first is on top
Cleanup
- Dish soap (biodegradable if you're washing up away from a designated sink) and a scourer
- A tea towel and a rubbish bag — pack out everything you pack in, including food scraps in most national parks
What you can usually leave at home for a weekend
Camp ovens, multi-burner stoves, full spice kits and large water containers are genuinely useful for longer or more remote trips, but for a weekend within a few hours of home they mostly add weight and packing time without getting used. If a piece of gear hasn't come out of the bag on your last two trips, it's a reasonable candidate to leave behind next time.
Before you leave
Check the gas bottle or canister actually has gas in it, and check fire restrictions for where you're headed — total fire ban conditions can rule out open flames and sometimes gas stoves too, depending on the state and the day. State fire authority websites (like the RFS in NSW or CFA in Victoria) publish current restrictions.
